PFC John Wheeler, D Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry, was killed in action on June 12, 1968, in Quang Tri Province — hostile, died outright, an explosive device (Virtual Wall), rather than small-arms fire. The only Delta Company narrative source reviewed so far for this period -- the veteran-transcribed company daily journal -- has an untranscribed gap from 10-18 June, when the company was on base defense at LZ Betty and then LZ Pedro. No incident-level detail is available from that source for Wheeler's death; it is not that the journal was checked and found no match, but that this date range was never transcribed. The explosive-device cause is at least consistent with a base-defense setting (a mine or booby trap, for instance), though this is inference, not a sourced circumstance.
