PFC John Clark Wheeler, D Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry, was killed in action on June 12, 1968, in Quang Tri Province. Virtual Wall records the cause as hostile fire, died outright, an explosive device — a mine, booby trap, or similar, rather than small-arms fire.
Why this isn't tied to a journal action
The only other D Company narrative source reviewed for this period, the veteran-transcribed Skipper Journal (3 June-3 July 1968), has an untranscribed gap from June 10 to June 18 — the company was on base defense at LZ Betty and then LZ Pedro during that stretch, but the journal itself gives no detail for those days. Wheeler's date of death falls squarely inside that gap.
The nearest documented single-casualty action, June 5 at grid YD325393, is seven days removed and — now that Wheeler's cause of death is confirmed as an explosive device rather than small-arms fire — a different mechanism entirely. That rules the June 5 action out as a match; it does not merely leave it uncertain.
