SP4 Paulson was killed by an explosive device on the night of 11 December 1967 during the Battle of Tam Quan, in Binh Dinh province, Republic of Vietnam. The 1st Brigade after-action report records that at 22:15 his unit — D Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry (Airmobile), 1st Cavalry Division — ambushed PAVN troops attempting to escape south. SP4 Paulson was 20.
