Killed in action — March 18, 1970
On March 18, 1970, SGT Richard Wiseman died of wounds — multiple fragmentation wounds, a ground casualty — in Tay Ninh Province (War Zone C), Republic of Vietnam. He was assigned to Headquarters & Headquarters Company (HHC), 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry; the unit honor roll lists him as attached to D Company — typical of the battalion assets (RTOs, forward observers, recon, commo, medics, heavy weapons) sent out to a line company in the field. He had been in-country only one month. He was 21 years old. He is near-certainly one of the casualties of the confirmed D Company, 2/8 Cavalry contact in the "Dog's Head" that day. The 1st Cavalry Division's official Operational Report (DTIC AD0512505) logs the action as "181110 Mar XT045833" — 18 March, 11:10 hrs — D Co receiving small-arms, automatic-weapons, and B-40 rocket fire, the contact breaking fifteen minutes later with 14 US wounded and no killed. Wiseman's "died of wounds" classification fits a man wounded there who died of those wounds; the date, unit, province, and the fragmentation wounds (a B-40 is a fragmentation weapon) all line up. The one step short of name-confirmation is the 2/8 Cav daily staff journal (NARA RG 472), which would list the wounded by name. See /events/contact-dogs-head-1970-03-18/.
