Killed in action — May 25, 1969
On May 25, 1969, CPL Richard White — known to comrades as "Dick" and "Neil" — was killed in Hau Nghia Province while serving with D Company ("White Skull"), 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry. A single command-detonated B-40 rocket, rigged in trees above a trail, killed him together with his platoon leader, 1LT John Karr, and CPL Wayne Garven; his casualty record gives the cause as an "other explosive device." White had been in-country about three months. He was 22 years old. See /events/trail-ambush-hau-nghia-1969-05-25/ and the family account left by the son of fellow RTO Ray Clooney.
