LP Incident
Grazed by a warning shot while on a listening post
Per Colavita's memoir, while D Company held the perimeter at LZ Rita, a listening post (LP) went overdue on its scheduled radio squelch check. Acting First Sergeant SFC Bruce Adams fired a single M-79 grenade round toward the LP's position as an alarm; the round burst close enough that Nix, one of the soldiers on the LP, came in the next morning with "a vertical slice right in the center of the tip of his nose." Colavita closes the anecdote with a wry, parenthetical aside — "(Good shootin,' Bruce!)" — treating it as a story rather than a serious wounding. Exact date not given; placed here as an approximate November 1968 marker, during Delta's early weeks holding Rita's perimeter.
