Letter Home — 24 October 1971
Written from FSB Jeffries after the company came in off the Oct 15–21 operation (per McGrew's calendar). A western-Pennsylvania note dates it neatly: he was "kind of surprised to hear the Pirates won the World Series" — Pittsburgh had taken Game 7 on 17 October 1971. He asks after his brothers Buss and Dan in hunting season and hopes his sister Mary Ellen's baby, due soon, arrives safely.
24 Oct. 71
Dear Mom,
Well here it is almost the end of October, it probably will be by the time you get this letter. I can't say I'm sorry to see it go.
It was real nice up until a couple of days ago when it started to rain again. I don't think the rainy season can last much longer. Right around the first of December should be the last of it. All in all, rainy season hasn't been as bad as I expected.
I got a letter from you today. You said the leaves were starting to change color. I'll be expecting some pictures soon.
I was kind of surprised to hear the Pirates won the World Series. I didn't really think they would win. I'm glad they did anyway.
How's Buss and Dan doing in small game season this year. I wonder if they've had any chances at deer with their bows.
I hope Mary Ellen doesn't have any trouble with her baby. She should have it pretty soon shouldn't she?
Well I hope everyone is getting along okay still. I'm doing all right over here.
I guess I'll get this in the mail now.
Love Marv
