Letter Home — 21 October 1971

Begun in the field on the evening of 21 October 1971 and finished the next day — the letter fixes its own time ("It's 6:40 now. It usually gets dark around 7:00"). By coincidence, 21 October 1971 was also the date of the contact at the Nui Ba Mountains in which PFC William Makowski was killed; the letter is noted here only for that shared date, not as an account of the action. Its content is entirely ordinary, which is part of what makes the date land.

21 Oct. 71

Dear Mom,

Hope everyone is still getting along okay. I'm doing all right over here. Things don't change much from day to day. But still things are pretty interesting, the work isn't boring at all.

It's almost dark so I'm going to finish this letter tomorrow. It's 6:40 now. It usually gets dark around 7:00.

I haven't heard from the people I sent the money to so maybe they got it. I'm going to write and find out for sure. Well I'll write more tomorrow.

Well here it is, another day. It looks like its going to be pretty hot but as long as we stay in the shade it isn't to bad. I guess fall should be pretty evident by now back home. Have you been getting much cold weather? I know it's going to be a big change from this hot weather.

Are them dogs doing any hunting yet? Rabbit season should have started by now. I'll be able to hunt them after Christmas.

I still have one bill I owe for pictures so I'm going to put it in with letter. I don't thing I'll take to many more pictures over here.

Well I guess that's all I have to say.

Love Marvin
