A quiet letter from late in his tour — he's "in one of my lazy spells," counts down "only 49 days left," and reports that "little Dean" (his nephew) is walking, as Shirley (Buss's wife) had predicted. Per McGrew's calendar he was in the field, on the operation that ran from the Oct 15 combat assault to the Oct 21 contact.

18 Oct. 71

Dear Mom,

Well I hope everything is still going alright back home. I'm getting along okay over here. We haven't been doing much lately but I'm in one of my lazy spells so I haven't written as much as I should have.

Yes the fall season should be showing itself about now. I wouldn't mind getting some pictures if you got time to send them. Don't send any more packages to me. I only have 49 days left and I can't think of anything I really need.

The weather's been pretty nice lately but the rainy season isn't over yet. It really hasn't been as rainy as I thought it would be.

About that bill you sent. I already paid it. They must not have gotten it yet or there's been a mix up. Anyway there's nothing to worry about. I haven't heard from them lately so they must have gotten it.

I'm glad to hear little Dean is walking although he probably causes his mother more trouble now. Shirley was right when she said Dean would be walking before I got home.

Well I guess I better get this letter ready for mailing. Don't forget to send a picture of Buss's porch too.

Love Marvin
