Silver Star
Silver Star action near Quang Tri — May 24, 1968
As Company Commander of D Company, 2nd Battalion (Airmobile), 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), Capt. Grannemann's unit became heavily engaged with a large enemy force during a search-and-destroy mission near Quang Tri. He exposed himself to hostile fire to locate and direct suppressive fire on the enemy positions, then placed an accurate base of fire on those positions to allow his wounded to be safely evacuated. Awarded the Silver Star (Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division, General Orders No. 3649, 22 Jun 1968).

Grannemann's last confirmed date in command of D Company is 8 Jun 1968. He left the company sometime in the following two and a half weeks — before 24 Jun 1968, when CPT Audis Garner (see soldiers/garner-audis) is confirmed in command — handing off the "Angry Skipper-6" callsign to him. Per Michael, citing Colavita's own memoir, "Company Grade: Memoir of an Angry Skipper," the full confirmed D Co command chain is Scholes (1967-68) -> Grannemann (confirmed 24 May-8 Jun 1968) -> Garner (confirmed by 24 Jun 1968, through ~Oct 1968) -> Colavita (Oct 1968-~1969). An earlier version of this entry stated Grannemann handed command directly to Colavita in October 1968 — corrected now that Garner's intervening command is established.

Co-briefed the 1st Brigade CO at D Company's CP — June 8, 1968
Two weeks after his Silver Star action, Capt. Grannemann was still commanding D Company when Col. John Stannard (CO, 1st Brigade) visited the company's command post in the field at 1015 hours. Grannemann and the battalion CO, LTC John Gibney, briefed him together. A large enemy cache (36 bunkers, mortar rounds, rockets, TNT, an AK-47 magazine, and NVA gear) was found later the same day, 1710 hours, at grid YD326393. Source: the D/2-8 Cav company daily journal (Skipper Journal, 3 Jun-3 Jul 1968), which originally transcribed his name as "Grannamann."
