LTC John "Jack" Dashiell assumed command of the 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry (Airmobile), relieving LTC Thomas H. Tackaberry. He would lead the battalion through its operations in Binh Dinh Province under Operation Pershing, based primarily from the An Khe / Binh Dinh area, until handing off in July 1967.

During the battalion's special duty month at Camp Radcliff (An Khe), providing base security, LTC Dashiell was relieved by LTC John Edward Stannard. The handover coincided with the unit's preparation for the 3d Brigade reconnaissance in force into the Song Re Valley (1–19 August 1967).
