2LT Michael Bennett began his tour in the Republic of Vietnam with D Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry (Airmobile), 1st Cavalry Division. He had been commissioned via Officer Candidate School in February 1967, approximately six months before deploying.

Killed in action — November 1, 1967
2LT Bennett was killed on 1 November 1967 by small arms fire in Binh Dinh Province, Republic of Vietnam, during Operation Pershing. He had been in-country for 63 days. He was 21 years old. A local newspaper reported him as the first recorded KIA from Brentwood, New Hampshire, and the 73rd from the state. He is buried at Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
