It establishes what the division and the 1st Brigade (2/8 Cav's brigade) were doing, not what D Company did on any given day. Treat the connection to specific casualties as highly likely context, not established fact, pending the battalion journal.
Operation Toan Thang III ("Certain Victory") was the III Corps offensive umbrella under which the 1st Cavalry Division operated through 1969. It began before this reporting period and continued past it; the division's stated purpose was to interdict PAVN/VC infiltration routes and destroy enemy base areas and forces in War Zones C and D.
Over the quarter the division's weight shifted across III Corps: during the first half of May 1969 it operated in Tay Ninh, Binh Long, and Binh Duong provinces; in mid-May it added a shift south into Long Khanh and Bien Hoa; in early June forces moved from Bien Hoa to Binh Tuy; and on 24 June elements shifted north into Phuoc Long. As the period closed the division was concentrating in Tay Ninh, Binh Long, Binh Duong, and Phuoc Long.
The campaign was prosecuted through several named operations (really designated areas of operation in which daily operations continued), run concurrently by the three brigades and often reinforced by the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment:
- Montana Raider (War Zone C, 13 Apr – 13 May) — three-brigade effort.
- Montana Scout (southern War Zone C, 1 Apr – 23 Jun) — 1st and 2nd Brigades.
- Comanche Warrior (War Zone D, 14 May – 1 Jun) and Creek II (19 May – 22 Jun) — 3rd Brigade.
- Kentucky Cougar (initiated 24 Jun) — the period's final operation, shifting north.
Where 2/8 Cav fit: the parent battalion was organic to the 1st Brigade, which operated in War Zone C / Tay Ninh — under Montana Raider (to 13 May), then Montana Scout, then Kentucky Cougar. The two War Zone D operations (Comanche Warrior, Creek II) were 3rd Brigade and did not involve 2/8 Cav.
Cumulative results, 1 May – 31 July 1969 (division): 2,696 enemy killed, 103 prisoners of war; U.S.: 247 killed, 1,781 wounded (732 requiring evacuation). The report assesses that the period severely disrupted the 1st NVA, 7th NVA, and 5th VC Divisions in War Zones C and D.
