Mission and form. Montana Scout was predominantly interdiction, with the 1st and 2nd Brigades deployed along the southern frontier of War Zone C. Small-unit patrols and ambushes along enemy lines of communication characterized the operation from 1 April to 23 June 1969; the northern half of the Montana Scout AO was covered extensively by aerial reconnaissance and surveillance.

1st Brigade activity (2/8 Cav's brigade). Operating from LZs Grant, Carolyn, St Barbara, Ike, Jamie, and White, the brigade placed maximum emphasis on ambush operations to interdict enemy movement of personnel, equipment, and supplies. As visual reconnaissance and "usually reliable intelligence" disclosed enemy concentrations in lower Base Area 355, the 1st Brigade launched a two-battalion seal-search-and-destroy operation with the 2/8 Cav, 2/12 Cav, and a tank company (11th ACR), and ran saturation ambushes to interdict movement into Base Area 355. The report credits the 2/8 Cav with establishing LZ Becky. In early–mid June, the 1st and 2nd Brigades (with the 11th ACR) attacked elements of the 95C and another regiment of the 1st NVA Division near the Crescent and in AO GOLD, with B-52 strikes preceding the commitment of troops.
