At 1600 hours on June 28, 1968, 1st Platoon, D Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry engaged four North Vietnamese soldiers with small-arms fire. One NVA was killed — an AK-47 (serial number 947752) and documents were recovered from him — and an estimated two more were wounded. No US casualties were reported, and no grid coordinate is given for the action, unusual for this source.
The transcriber, a D Company veteran writing in the first person, identifies this as his own first enemy contact and names the 1st squad's machine gunner only by the nickname "White Skull."
